'It is crucial for children to develop a life-long love of reading. Reading consists of two dimensions: language comprehension and word reading. Language comprehension (necessary for both reading and writing) starts from birth. It only develops when adults talk with children about the world around them and the books (stories and non-fiction) they read with them, and enjoy rhymes, poems and songs together. Skilled word reading, taught later, involves both the speedy working out of the pronunciation of unfamiliar printed words (decoding) and the speedy recognition of familiar printed words. Writing involves transcription (spelling and handwriting) and composition (articulating ideas and structuring them in speech, before writing).'

Teach Us Too

We want our children to become confident and competent at communicating and to be as independent as possible. Reading is a key skill that supports children to interact with the world in which they live. Although our children are at the beginning of their journey to read, due to their age and stage of development, we recognise the importance of laying strong foundations that can be built upon throughout a child’s learning journey.

At Greenhall, we see reading as the way learners gain meaning from text, symbols and the environment.

Developing a love of reading and ‘Reading for Pleasure’ are central to our work. We have therefore developed a progressive list of key texts and rhymes for each age and stage of development. Appropriate books are available in each room and shared with the children daily. These books have been selected for their content, rhyme, rhythm and vocabulary.

We have a library as well as book areas in each room. We also have a range of book bags for use both at school and for children to take home to share with family. Events such as ‘World Book Day’ provide opportunities to celebrate reading across the whole school.

Where appropriate to the children's age and stage of development, we teach phonics through the Little Wandle Scheme.
